From Milan to Lake Como: how to get there
Lake Como is one of the most beloved destinations for travellers passing through Milan. The good news is that the distance between the two cities is minimal: about 40 km separate the Lombard capital from the lake's shore, making it a perfect destination for a day trip or a relaxing weekend.
By train — this is the most comfortable and recommended way. From Milano Centrale, regional trains head directly to Como San Giovanni with a frequency of about one train every hour. The journey takes just over an hour. Alternatively, from the Milano Cadorna station (S11 line and Trenord trains), you can reach Como Lago, a station located right on the lakeside. This second option is often preferred by tourists because it arrives in the heart of the lakeside city, just a few steps from the boarding piers.
By car — from Milan, take the A9 motorway (Milan–Chiasso) heading north. In smooth traffic conditions, you can reach Como in about 40 minutes. During summer weekends and public holidays, traffic can significantly extend travel times. Parking in central Como is limited; it is advisable to use peripheral parking and continue on foot to the lake.
By bus — several companies connect Milan to Como with stops also near Malpensa and Linate airports. It is an economical option but less flexible compared to the train.
From Malpensa airport — those arriving directly from outside Italy can take the Malpensa Express to Milano Cadorna and then continue by train to Como, with a total travel time of about one and a half hours.
Once you arrive at the lake, the most beautiful — and freest — way to experience it is to hire a private boat. On board a vessel just for you, you can explore the historic villas lining the shores, stop at the quieter coves, reach Bellagio or Varenna without fixed schedules, and enjoy the lake exactly as you prefer. On the Lake Como App, you will find a selection of boats available for hire, with or without a skipper, suitable for every type of experience: from a romantic outing for two to a family excursion.
